What Is IP Targeting?

IP Targeting is a message delivered to a user's geographic location as determined by his or her Internet Protocol (IP) address.  Every device connected to the internet has an IP address associated with it.  As marketers, we use this targeting technique to deliver specific messages based on a user's location.

Why Use IP Targeting?

IP Targeting allows an advertiser to be very specific with who they are targeting and what type of message they are delivering, all at a fraction of the cost of many other advertising methods.  These campaigns typically have a higher response rate, so results are generally stronger with this one on one approach.  It's a hyper-targeted marketing approach.

How Does IP Targeting Work?

IP Targeting requires a list of peoples names and physical address. It can be your own prospect or sold list or any outside list that you may purchase. A process is used to match those physical addresses against a huge file of IP addresses.  This match process will typically yield a 50% to 75% match rate.  Once matched, you can send your message into those matched homes. 

What Is The Cost For IP Targeting?

Cost is completely dependent on the number of advertising impressions being presented. You will need to know the number of matched IP addresses from your list(s).  Costs can range from $30 to $35 per thousand impressions.

For example, if you have 10,000 matched IP addresses, those 10,000 addresses x 30 impressions per month = 300,000 impressions for one month.  300,000 impressions x $30 per thousand impressions = $9,000 for a one month program.  For best exposure, most marketers recommend a minimum three month program.  As you can see, the cost is reasonable when compared to print and postage campaigns.  Plus, the IP Marketing campaign has a much higher response and close rate.
